Beating the Acrylic Bathtub Blues

Acrylic bathtub got you down?

Is your acrylic bathtub dull and dingy? Squeaky tub turning your peaceful soak into an annoying nightmare? Try these tips for the best-looking bathtub in town!

Acrylic is a great material to use for bathroom fixtures. It makes lightweight, affordable and beautiful acrylic bathtubs and showers. The downside? Even if they’re properly maintained, they wear over time and cause issues. Try these tips for beating the bathtub blues.

Dull Finishes

Your dull acrylic tub may simply be a victim of soap scum or hard water deposits. You may be able to restore the shine with one of these solutions.

  • Mix 2 cups of white vinegar and 2 cups of water in a spray bottle. Spray the tub and allow to sit for 15 minutes. Scrub with a microfiber cloth or VERY soft brush. Rinse well.
  • Mix 1 cup of borax or baking soda with 2 tablespoons of mild dishwashing liquid and 2 cups of water. Apply the solution to the tub with a VERY soft brush and allow it to sit for 15 minutes. Scrub with a microfiber cloth and rinse well.

Tub still not shining? It’s likely the finish on the tub is damaged beyond your ability to clean it. The good news is that Fox Valley Bathtub Refinishing can re-gaze your tub or refinish your shower surround! It’s more affordable than you think and you’ll probably be able to use the tub the same day!

Noisy Tub

If your acrylic tub squeaks every time you move, it’s probably either the connection between the acrylic shower surround and tub or lack of support beneath the tub. Try these DIY fixes and see if they help.

  • If you have an acrylic shower surround, it may not be snapped into the tub properly. Check to make sure there isn’t a loose connection between the shower surround and tub.
  • If the squeaking happens when weight is placed on the floor of the tub, it may be that the tub is flexing or bending due to lack of support. Not only is the squeak annoying, but the flexing can weaken the tub and lead to cracks and splits. Ambitious DIYers can try injecting a low expansion foam filler or shims to fill gaps between the tub floor and bathroom floor. Everyone else should call a professional.

Has flexing and bending has caused your tub to crack or split? Give us a call. We can repair the cracks and splits and then refinish the tub to its original beauty. Contact us for a free estimate.
